Moving gets hectic fast. Most of the little stuff can be dealt with as you go, but these are the 7 things to take care of about a month before moving day so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.
1. Forward Your Mail
Set up mail forwarding with Canada Post so important mail doesn’t keep going to your old address while you’re updating everyone with your new one.
2. Update Your Important Addresses
Update your address with the important ones first:
Banks, mortgage lender, credit cards, insurance, CRA and any government programs you receive.
You can take care of the less important accounts as forwarded mail arrives.
3. Arrange Your Utilities
Arrange to disconnect or transfer services at your current home and have them ready at your new home.
Think:
Water • Sewer • Garbage • Electricity • Gas • Internet • Phone • Cable

4. Book Your Movers or Moving Truck
Try to book at least 30 days ahead, especially if you’re moving around the end or beginning of the month when movers and rental trucks can fill up quickly.
If needed, this is also the time to arrange storage or a moving container.
5. Arrange Your Home Insurance
When you’re buying a home, make sure your new insurance policy is arranged well before possession day.
Also remember to let your insurer know when coverage should end on your current property if you are selling it.
6. Register Your Children for School
If your children will be changing schools, start the registration process early and arrange any required school busing.
This is one of those jobs that’s much easier to deal with before moving week.
7. Make a Plan for Your Pets
Moving day can be chaotic for pets. Consider arranging for family, friends, daycare or kennel care so they are somewhere safe while doors are open and people are coming and going.
One More Thing…
If you want your new home professionally cleaned, carpets or furnace ducts cleaned, book that early too. Good cleaners can fill up quickly.
